Dear Hitch,

​Your mother is glad to hear that you are well, but I have sad news. Your daddy took to his bed in October with heart trouble and passed November 7, and your mother took it hard. I have done all I can to help, but I have my own spread, and, come planting season, there will be nobody to work the farm to which you are the natural heir. We are all glad that you have made a success in Bessemer, but your mother begs you to come home, son, if only to make a crop and the settle the estate. She is willing to sell out and move with you to the city if that is your wish, but right now she needs you something terrible.
